Let's reduce healthcare costs and let's improve the health of our citizens. Prevention, as everyone knows, is the key to both. According to studies, nutrition care reduces costs by as much as $10 for every $1 spent, and reduces the incidence and severity of the chronic diseases plaguing our society.
This was dramatically demonstrated at a Press Conference hosted by St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City on January 28, 2010.

Please support the Nutrition Mandate bill pending in the New York State Legislature.
New York State has been a leader in requiring health plans to provide for the medical needs of its citizens. For example, New York State was the second state to require coverage of diabetes supplies and medical nutrition therapy for patients with diabetes. Now 46 states require similar coverage under the insurance plans in their states.

Today many plans in New York State cover medical nutrition therapy ONLY for patients with diabetes, as required by the Diabetes Mandate. Patients with these plans have NO COVERAGE for such conditions as cardiovascular disease, celiac disease, gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, pre-diabetes, food allergies, eating disorders and numerous other medical conditions for which medical nutrition therapy is clinically effective and cost effective. The pending legislation would reverse this situation, so that all medical conditions, not just diabetes, would be covered.
